Letter & number codes

Secret codes hide words by shifting letters along the alphabet, mirroring them, or swapping them for numbers. Find the rule and the message falls open. Everything you need is on this page.

A code is a secret way of writing. There is always a rule, and once you find the rule you can read anything. Each puzzle gives you one example to show you the rule. Your job is to spot it, then use it.

First, the tool you will use most: the alphabet, with each letter’s position number underneath. You count along it to see how far a letter has moved.

The alphabet, to help you count (scroll sideways on a small screen):

For example, A is 1 and D is 4, so going from A to D is 3 steps forward. Going from D back to A is 3 steps back. That counting is the heart of nearly every puzzle here.

There are three kinds of code below. Each one starts with a short explanation and a worked example, then lets you try it.

1. Letter codes

In a letter code, every letter of a word changes to make the code. To find out how, line the word up with its code and look at each letter in turn. Here are the patterns to watch for.

Worked example · a sliding code
If the code for CAT is FDW, what is the code for DOG?
  1. Compare the first letters. C becomes F. Count along: C, D, E, F. That is 3 steps forward.
  2. Check it is the same jump. A → D is 3 forward, T → W is 3 forward. The rule is “move 3 forward.”
  3. Use it on DOG. D moves 3 to G, O moves 3 to R, G moves 3 to J.
Answer: GRJ.

A different kind: mirror codes

Some codes do not slide at all. Instead, each letter flips to its partner at the opposite end of the alphabet. A swaps with Z, B with Y, C with X, and so on. Here is every mirror partner:

How do you spot a mirror code? The jumps will not be equal, and you will see letters near the start of the alphabet swapping with letters near the end. When that happens, use the mirror strip above to read off each partner.

Worked example · a mirror code
If the code for CAT is XZG, what is the code for DOG?
  1. Try counting jumps. C to X is a huge jump, but A to Z is bigger still, and T to G goes backwards. The jumps are not equal, so it is not a sliding code.
  2. Check the mirror strip. C pairs with X, A pairs with Z, T pairs with G. They all match. It is a mirror code.
  3. Mirror each letter of DOG. D pairs with W, O pairs with L, G pairs with T.

2. Letter connections

Here you are shown two letters that turn into two other letters, like “AC is to BD.” The clever part is that each letter can move in its own way. So you work out what happens to the first letter, then to the second letter, then do the very same moves to a new pair.

Use the alphabet strip to count each move. The two letters might move by different amounts, or even in different directions, one forwards and one backwards.

Worked example
AC is to BD as RT is to ?
  1. First letter. A → B. That is 1 step forward.
  2. Second letter. C → D. That is also 1 step forward.
  3. Do the same to R and T. R moves 1 forward to S. T moves 1 forward to U.
Answer: SU.

Work out the move for each letter, then do the same to the last pair. Watch out, the two letters may move differently.

3. Word-number codes

In these, every letter is given a secret number, and the same letter always gets the same number. You are shown some words and their number codes, but the codes are jumbled, so you have to match them up.

The way in is to look for words that share letters. Two words made of exactly the same letters (just in a different order) will have exactly the same digits, in a different order. A word that shares only some letters will share only some digits. Start by spotting those.

Worked example
Match each word to its code.
Words: SAW, WAS, SAT  ·  Codes: 163, 368, 361
  1. Find the twins. SAW and WAS are the same three letters reordered, so they share the same three digits. 361 and 163 both use 3, 6 and 1, so those two belong to SAW and WAS. That leaves 368 for SAT.
  2. Use a shared letter to choose. SAT starts with S, and its code 368 starts with 3, so S = 3.
  3. Finish. SAW also starts with S, so its code starts with 3 → that is 361. WAS is the one left, 163.
Answer: SAW = 361, WAS = 163, SAT = 368.
